Why is Diwali Celebrated?
There are many reasons as to why Diwali is celebrated in India, which not only varies from religion to religion but also from region to region. Below are some of the mythical and historical reasons why and where is Diwali celebrated.
North India celebrates the festival Diwali as Lord Rama returns to Ayodhya. The ancient legend of Ramayana mentions how Lord Rama defeated the Asura King Ravana in Lanka after 14 years of exile in the forest.
And when Lord Rama returned to his kingdom capital on an auspicious day for the new moon in Karthik month, all the residents of Ayodhya celebrated the return of their beloved king by illuminating diyas and decorating homes to be collectively known over the time as 'Diwali'.
In South India, the Diwali celebration varies among the states. One story is that Mahabali who was the biggest devotee of Lord Vishnu was a very wise king. But over time Mahabali had become egoistic. Lord Vishnu wanted to get rid of his ego.
He disguised himself as a Brahmin and asked Mahabali to donate some charity. The king boasted and couldn't refuse and was tricked by Lord Vishnu by giving up his kingship and wealth.
According to another story Diwali is celebrated to honour Lord Krishna's killing the demon king Narakasura and giving freedom to thousands of girls. This day is celebrated one day before Diwali, and the occasion is known as Naraka Chaturdashi.
In several areas, Diwali is also worshipped as the start of the new year by praying to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. In Gujarat, it is celebrated as a festival of light and wealth.
The Hindu scriptures mention that Goddess Lakshmi was incarnated from the depth of the ocean. Both Devas and Asuras were seeking Amrit, which is the nectar of immortality, and thus they performed Samudra Manthan.
Many celestial objects came up from the depths of the ocean, and one of them was the Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi arose on a new moon day in the month of Karthik. And in the darkest night of the year, she was married to Lord Vishnu.
To mark this holy occasion, the ambience was illuminated with lights. Lakshmi Puja is performed to usher wealth and prosperity. East India celebrates Diwali to honour Goddess Durga's powerful avatar Kali, known as Kali Puja.
Kali Puja is hugely celebrated in Bengal and Assam. Goddess Kali is worshipped on the day of Diwali. According to the legend, there was a fight between the Gods and demons, where the Demons got the victory in the battle.
Goddess Kali killed all the anger. But in battling, she completely lost her perspective and started destroying everyone in the way. Lord Shiva then made a fateful intervention marking the occasion as Kali Puja.

Dhanteras: Celebration starts with people cleaning their homes to bring home good fortune by shopping for gold ornament or kitchen utensils.

Day 3 – Lakshmi Puja: This is the most auspicious day for Diwali with all family members coming together for Lakshmi Puja with sweets and garlands adorned to the goddess.
Day 4 – Vishwakarma Day: Acknowledged as the first day of the new year, people get together to wish each other.
Day 5 - Bhai Dooj: Celebration for Diwali ends traditionally with sisters praying for the longevity of their beloved brothers and getting memorable gifts.
How is Diwali Celebrated?
Though Diwali is considered as the main Hindu festival still is celebrated among the Jains and Sikhs as well.
People clean their homes entirely and decorate their houses with Diyas lit everywhere to lighten the house and make Rangolis which brightens everything with colours, so when the lamps are lit, it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi blesses with good fortune as well as Lord Ganesh blesses for good luck.
To offer these Gods, the families perform puja with sacred prayers. People refrain from eating meat or drink alcohol in honour of the divine spirits. People light up lamps outside their houses.
