Why is it celebrated?

There are many stories prevalent in the ancient Indian mythology of celebrating Pongal. One story is that of Lord Indra and Lord Krishna. Lord Indra had become arrogant after being named king of deities. In his childhood, Lord Krishna decided to teach him a lesson.

Krishna told cowherds to stop worshipping Lord Indra, which angered Indra. Indra sent clouds and thunderstorms for days and Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain to protect people and made Indra realise his mistake.

Significance of Pongal:

The Pongal festival celebrations are arranged on the first day of the month (as per Tamil calendar) which falls in January every year. It is the period when the Sun enters the Makara Rasi (Capricornus) and begins its journey towards the northern hemisphere.

This period is also called Uttarayanam. Traditionally, Pongal is symbolised as the end of winter and the beginning of summer. Pongal is celebrated by the state of Tamil Nadu and the worldwide Tamil population.

It is also celebrated by the people of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Manipur, and Uttar Pradesh as “Makar Sankranti”.

A four-day celebration sums up Pongal festivities. Bhogi Pongal is the beginning of the festival followed by Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal – the fourth and final day.

Bhogi Pongal

With this day, people remove all the unwanted things or materials from their houses. They clean everything and decorate their homes with mango leaves and flowers. The unwanted things are then burnt on the dawn of the bhogi day. They create a bonfire and worship Lord Indra – the rain god.

Thai Pongal

The next day of the celebrations is the main among the four-day festivities. It is called “Thai Pongal”. It is celebrated by cooking the special dish “Pongal” in earthen pots under firewood towards the direction of the Sun. The rice from the first harvest is cooked in milk with jaggery.

Mattu Pongal

A day after the Surya Pongal, it is the time for Mattu Pongal. On this occasion, people decorate their cows, bullock, and cattle with painted horns, garlands, kumkum, turmeric water, jaggery, fruits, and venn pongal. Animals are given special meals and worshipped too.

Kaanum Pongal

Marking the end of the Pongal festival, Kaanum is dedicated to family reunions. Friends, relatives, and neighbors come together to increase bonding in societies.

Youngsters enthusiastically take blessing from elders and pass gifts to the children along with consuming fresh sugarcane from fields. Do wish your friends and relatives with these Pongal wishes that would bring peace, happiness and prosperity to their lives.

Conclusion:

Pongal marks a beginning to the new year with fresh hopes, fresh ideas, and positivity to the mind. It is also for showing thankfulness to all the blessings bestowed upon us by the almighty. It instils the gist of Hindu culture and traditions in young minds. Every Pongal can be made memorable by the reunion or gathering of all the family members.
