This is one of the many hundreds of quotes by the spiritual leader Osho, the influential spiritual leader who founded an Ashram in India and the USA and was the owner of 20 Rolls Royces. Osho, also known as Bhagwan Rajneesh, was born in Madhya Pradesh on 11th December 1931. His journey from being Chandra Mohan to Osho was long and sensational.

Having been brought up in a Jain family in his early life, it is rather surprising to believe that Osho had an unconventional view on philosophy and religion. He is believed to have attained Samadhi at the age of 21, but it was still slightly long until he had disciples and created a wave of followers based on his sometimes controversial teachings.

Osho spent the first seven years of his life with his maternal grandparents before returning home to his parents. His father was a cloth merchant. Chandra Mohan was a rebellious kid even in his childhood and often got to the wrong side of people with his views and thoughts. At 20, he joined Hitkarini College but was soon transferred to DNJ College at Jabalpur for getting into an argument with a professor over some subject matter. Here too, he was expelled from college but was allowed to appear for his exams on a similar account of events.

It was at this time that Chandra Mohan began working part-time for a local newspaper and also attended public-speaking and delivered a rather controversial speech. People appreciated the freshness of his logical thoughts and his way of philosophy. After delivering a controversial speech, he was discharged from his duties. He went on to pursue an MA in Philosophy and passed with high marks and started working as a professor.

In 1974, he and his disciples founded an Ashram in Pune, and the number of his followers began to continue growing. A Hindu fundamentalist once attacked him over his unconventional thoughts and views on religion and philosophy. Due to the growing unrest among people in India and in fact, many other countries about his preaching, and his deteriorating health, he decided to migrate to the USA on medical grounds. In the US, his disciples bought land in Oregon to set up an Ashram. This, however, led to a lot of friction between the locals and his disciples. After many clashes and even a murder committed by the disciples, Osho was asked to leave the country and return to India.

Once he returned to Pune in India, he adopted the name ‘Osho’ which means ‘Master’ in Japanese. He passed away in 1990 in mysterious circumstances.
