In some churches, the preparations for the midnight mass and candlelight services are held one day before, and celebrations start one month before Christmas day.

People spread love on this day, greeting each other with “Merry Christmas”. And not just in Christian countries, but in non-christian countries too, people are excited about this occasion and wait for Christmas to arrive.

Why is it Celebrated?

Christmas or Christ's day marks the birthday of Jesus Christ. This is the day that Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is also known as the 'Son of God'.Very few people know that Christmas is indeed a combination of two words: “Christ + Mass”.

This means that everybody remembers how Lord Jesus died for them and then came back from death three days later. And the mass service on this day is the only service that is held after sunset and before sunrise.

There are two reasons why people wish to be with their loved ones on the eve of Christmas: The first is that they want to celebrate their holiday with the ones whom they cherish the most in life.

It can be a family, friends, or even the next-door neighbours. The other reason is that the people want to come together and thank the Lord for all that he has given them.

Although there are some doubts among the historians towards the accurate date of Jesus’s birth, the Catholic Church decided the 25th of December as the official date in the 3rd Century, after the death of Jesus.

There are many theories around this. Some say that the sheep present in many of the Bible stories give a hint that Jesus was born in the Spring season.

Who Celebrates Christmas?

Well, one thing is obvious that all Christians celebrate Christmas with excitement and enthusiasm. They wait for this day for the holidays, snow, and presents. Apart from the Christians, people belonging to other religions also take part in the celebrations.

The way they all celebrate might be different, the excitement remains the same. Everyone loves to go and visit each other’s houses, going out to unique places for meals or carols, and exchanging gifts and greetings.

Christmas is celebrated all over the world. Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America, and South America - if there are Christians living on these lands, they will celebrate the coming of the “Son of God” on this Earth.
